Microsoft has announced the availability of Windows 8.1, the first significant update of its latest OS. It is now possible to get Windows 8.1 directly in the Windows Store, but have Microsoft managed to fix the many problems that users have reported?

It’s last year that Microsoft launched Winsows 8, but this operating system has not been as successful as hoped. The new OS proposed many changes (maybe even too much) in its conception as well as a significant break in design and ergonomics, which has probably not been to the liking of everyone.

Another novelty was the abandonment of the “Service Packs” in favour of more regular and important updates. Due to consumer dissatisfaction, the Redmond company has initiated a comprehensive plan, which aims to update its flagship OS. And since yesterday evening, Windows 8.1 is available for download via the Windows Store. With the introduction of some new aesthetic and functional features, the software giant hopes to win back the hearts of it’s many (but dwindling) users.

So What’s New?

The main query of Windowsians was the return of the Start button, which is not only a trademark of the Windows system, but also a regular feature for over 20 years. With Windows 8.1, Microsoft announced the re-introduction of the famous button, and some other options will be available through the right click.

The second concern was the lack of ability to boot straight to the desktop. Indeed, many users do not really see the interest of starting their workstations on the Modern UI interface, and now it will be possible to start the machine directly on the classic desktop.

The Modern UI home screen also receives some love, as it features new customization items. In addition to better integration of SkyDrive, Microsoft has also updated its various applications, ranging from Xbox Music, Bing, and Mail, as well as incorporating better management of tiles.

So How Do I Get Windows 8.1?

For the desktop versions of Windows 8, it is possible to update in two ways. First, if you are a current user of Windows 8 RT, you can do the upgrade for free, in the shape of a package weighing 3.42 GB. Whatever your version. Secondly, holders of an earlier version of Windows will have to pay $119.99 for Windows 8.1 and $199.99 for Windows 8.1 Pro by retrieving the entire system.

Having to pay so much for what is basically an update, is a real kick in the teeth for many. Don’t worry thought people, there’s always Ubuntu if you want a free alternative.

Ok… But I have already installed Windows 8.1 RTM or Public Preview…

No panic ! Concerning the Public Preview, the Redmond firm says it will be possible to install the final release of Windows 8.1, but you will need to provide the product key of Windows 8. Now concerning Windows 8.1 RTM, you should have a little update to do. It is about 100 MB for 32-bit and 200 MB for 64-bit. This is due to small last minutes changes.

Microsoft has launched a large stone into the pond, with Windows 8.1. And you who have been disappointed with the first version of Windows 8, would you be interested by this update?
